Part One: Audience

The people who read what you write are your audience.

Use the checklist on page 312 of your Ginn English book to evaluate your science cards designed for first grade.

How did you make your science cards meet the needs of a first grade reader?

Part Two: Text Features

Text features are the parts of your writing that help make reading easier. You should choose a pattern of text features for all your cards:

Font: easy to read, color, size, bold vocabulary
Background: consistent in design and color on all cards
Card design 1: consistent titles, subtitles, captions on all cards
Card design 2: consistent lines, pictures, bullets, on all cards
Graphics (pictures): consistent location, explanation
General Features: Include a title card, author card, conclusion card, source card

Title? Introduction (interest/purpose)?

Cards on topic with accurate/technical details?

Conclusion (interest/purpose)? One topic per card/paragraph? Spelling? Punctuation? Grammar?
