The Project: About Me, My Goals, My Learning

At the beginning of the year, students first learned PowerPoint, a Microsoft presentation application.

Students told about themselves, about their technology goals, and what they had been learning in school so far. At this point students took turns at the computers while team members worked on other assignments.

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Writing 2.2 Write for different purposes to inform others

Reading 2.1 Understand the meaning of what is read by summarizing ideas in own words

Technology Integration

2. Students work towards a lesson-relevant goal.

8. All students are able to participate.

9. Students are interested about learning.

The Project: Algebra--The Border Problem

Next students inserted spreadsheet charts in PowerPoint for our algebra unit. Students analyzed their methods of finding the number of border tiles in any square set of tiles. Students generalized formulas that represented their methods and computed the number of tiles in the border through the PowerPoint spreadsheet. (See Marilyn Burns Math text K-6)

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Math 1.5 Understand and apply concepts and procedures from algebraic sense (create and extend patterns; represent patterns with graphs; use variables in simple equations)

Math 2.1 Investigate situations (search for patterns)

Math 2.3 Construct solutions (apply methods and operations)

Writing 2.2 Write for different purposes to inform others

Technology Integration

2. Students work towards a lesson-relevant goal.

8. All students are able to participate

9. Students are interested about learning.

6. I'd have trouble accomplishing this lesson without the technology.

The Project: School Board Presentations by Students

Students shared learning with the Nespelem School Board of Directors. Each group created a slide presentation of their use of technology to learn content area skills.

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Writing 1.1 Develop concept and design--organize thoughts clearly

Writing 2.2 Write for different purposes to inform others

Communication 2.1 Communicates ideas clearly and effectively to a certain audience.

Communication 2.3 Use effective delivery, adjusting strategies to audience and purpose

Communication 2.5 Use action, sound, images to support presentation

Technology Integration

2. Students work towards a lesson-relevant goal.

8. All students are able to participate.

9. Students are interested about learning.

4. A real problem is solved by the use of technology.

The Project: Proposal to Principal

A group of students wanted to join the Journey North project about phenology (the changing of the seasons). Part of the project included planting tulips. Using a Microsoft Word Form with hidden text, students followed directions for writing a proposal on the form, and then submitted it to the Principal who approved their request.

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Writing 1.2 Use style appropriate for audience and purpose (official proposal)

Writing 2.2 Write for different purposes to persuade

Reading 2.1 Understand the meaning of what is read by summarizing ideas in own words

Technology Integration

2. Students work towards a lesson-relevant goal.

4. A real problem is being solved by the use of technology.

9. Students are interested about learning.

The Project: Atoms; Atoms & Electricity

Atom Builder

The Internet brings the world to our classroom. Many assignments included Internet research. One link enabled students to interactively create carbon atoms from a hydrogen atom, keeping the balance of components intact so the atom does not ionize or radioactively decay. The site is at < http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/tryit/atom/buildatomp.html> and allows teachers to ftp the files so a direct Internet connection is not needed.

Research and Study Skills

Other links provided more technical, yet readable information to augment the textbook.

To guide students through the studying process, students took notes in an Excel form entitled "Text Analysis". Students connected Internet research to our previously learned knowledge, analyzing the information to learn more. Three columns in Excel formed the basis for study: Key Words and Phrases from Text; What I Already Know; Analyze/Connect Info.

Student teams worked together following group roles, discussing the Internet text and each other's knowledge to complete columns one and two. Then students discussed those ideas to analyze and connect the information in column three, thereby reading to learn.

Students then placed their documents into a shared folder via the intranet so I could transfer them to my laptop, and I added comments to cells to guide their thinking so they can extend the learning through revision.

Documentation of Learning

Students analyzed the text in the Text Analysis forms and created their own atom riddle cards from which to study.

Just in time learning

study skills/ copy and paste from Internet to Excel/ read comments/revise work/ save to intranet/ Hyper Studio/

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Writing 2.2 Write for different purposes to inform others

Reading 1.2 Build vocabulary through reading

Reading 2.1 Understand the meaning of what is read by summarizing ideas in own words

Reading 2.2 Expand comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing information

Reading 3.1 Read to learn new information in science

Reading 3.2 Read directions to perform a task (create riddle cards)

Technology Integration

1. An outside observer would view the use of technology as a seamless part of the lesson.

2. Students work towards a lesson-relevant goal.

3. The technology is a logical extension of the lesson.

6. Remove the technology, and the learning goal is difficult to accomplish.

8. All students are able to participate.

9. Students are interested about learning.

10. More is happening than you expected.
