Granite Cuts at Sunbanks Resort

by Cassie James

Along time ago, about seven hundred fifty million years ago, granite formed in the ocean crustal plate. The glacial lake floods ten thousand years ago easily eroded layers of basalt to the base of the old granite rock.

Other areas show lava that came from volcanoes and created granite rocks twenty to thirty million years ago.

If you look at the granite you can see that it is a light color with a coarse texture. The molten rock cooled slowly to form the granite crystals.

Granite contains three minerals . They are quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase feldspar: granite canloe pink, light gray, and white. It makes these colors because of the minerals that are inside of it. Granite has a couple of dark colors. They are dark brown, dark green, or black minerals.

Magma that pushed it's way through granite to the surface and cooled quickly, formed basalt.
