Dear Families,

Thank you for a wonderful year working with your children. Your support especially has encouraged the success of your children at school.

We would like to offer you another opportunity to support your child's continued success by encouraging your children to read and write this summer. By reading and writing throughout the summer break, you child will continue using the skills learned this year and will more easily begin the new year in the fall.

Please join your children in reading and writing almost every day, preferably for twenty minutes each day.

Read recipes, newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes, road signs, comic books, directions to computer games, letters, directions, etc. As you can see, twenty minutes a day doesn't need to be all at once!

Write letters to relatives, new or copied recipes, a journal or diary, short poems, notes to each other, lists of favorite things (colors, sounds, animals, movies, songs, musicians, recipes, places to visit, things to do), directions for games (even ones you invent!) or directions to a friend's house (make a map), "the best day of summer," "the worst day of summer." One fun writing project is "Truth and Lies." Write down three things about yourself, two are false and one is the truth. Share them with someone who must guess, by asking you yes/no questions, which situation is the truth. We could have fun next fall sharing these!

Keep all your writing in a folder along with the reading chart. Bring them back to school in the fall and receive a Certificate of Recognition from the Governor of Washington. In addition, the top twenty students with neat and complete charts and folders will receive a walkman CD player. The rest of the students who return completed charts and folders will receive a five-dollar gift certificate.

You received a packet in the mail with: the reading chart, pamphlets of reading information to help parents and guardians, and a letter from the governor. Extra copies are in the office at school.
